REPORTS BASIC Is Alive and - Well? Ludwig Braun Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn In his recent article "The Case Against BASIC", Mr. Jerry L. Ogdin has made some very strong statements about BASIC. Mr. Ogdin's major conclusion is that the BASIC language is dead because of the proliferation of BASIC compilers, which graphs, ~s occurred in the last few years. In the following para- I should like to address myself to a number of Mr. Ogdin's specific however, I wish first to comments and to add my own comments and suggestions; address myself to Mr. Ogdin's major conclusion. Although it is true that certain incompatibilities recently developed compilers, have crept into BASIC is still alive and well, in my judgment. BASIC still is far and away the best language which I have seen for application in education. I would hate to see it disappear just because of some presently The solution, I think, is for the user community, develop existing incompatibilities. particularly the educational user, to demand that the manufacturers compatible compilers rather than continue their competitiveand efforts to modify the language. This approach, wasteful it seems to me, is far preferable to the holding of a requiem
