MCI stands for Media Control Interface; it is Microsoft's standard for providing device-independent capabilities for playing video and audio files. With the MCI, it is possible to seamlessly integrate almost any object needed for a multimedia segment into APL applications. This includes playing wave, midi, video and CD audio files. It is also possible to control video tape decks for the integration of analog editing. With these capabilities it is possible to create multimedia applications which can be used for either the creation of multimedia projects, such as video editing, or just for the play back of a multimedia segment. While these capabilities alone are exciting, the market for multimedia applications is maturing.
