Instructional Applications of Computer s AN UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULU M IN INSTRUCTIONAL APPLICATIONS OF COMPUTER S J . Richard Denni s Department of Secondary Educatio n University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaig n Urbana, IL 6180 1 Several have put forth statements on the training of pre-college personne l to teach topics from computer science (cf . Statz, 1975 ; Frederick, 1975) . Suc h proposals are noteworthy, and the plans' appropriate to their common goal, namely , providing training to those who wish to teach computing concepts to others, i .e . teach about computers . Today, and over the next several years, individual school s and their clientele will benefit from teachers with such training . However, wit h the declining enrollment picture, and the budget forces created by inflation an d ever-increasing instructional costs, the ability of public schools to affor d people a portion of whose teaching assignments involve teaching about computer s will be seriously impaired . Although, as just mentioned, fewer new teachers will find teaching position s over the next several years, there will be new teachers hired . Many of thes e will be hired in schools now having computing resources .
