Italian i L,aboratorio di Analisi Numerica del CN R Pavia (Italy ) Work in the field of Computer Assisted Instruction was begun at th e Numerical Analysis Laboratory (L .A .N .) in Pavia in 1970, with the aim o f appraising the value of using C .A .I . techniques for the teaching o f certain disciplines (with particular regard to programming languages an d Numerical Analysis), and of testing the didactic effectiveness of thes e techniques . Since, in view of the targets we had set ourselves, it was considere d important to obtain concrete results within a reasonably short time, i t was decided to utilize the COURSEWRITER language available on the IBM 360/4 4 computer at the University of Pavia's EDP Centre . COURSEWRITER did in fact provide a language for the drafting o f teaching material that was easy to use and effective both for th e presentation of texts and for the analysis of answers . Moreover, i t provided a satisfactory set of commands
