This paper describes, in general terms, a proposed portable device to aid people with significant impairment of motor and/or sensory functions. The emphasis is on a flexible microprocessor-based system composed of input modules, output modules, and an internal semantic representation. This system organization is easily expandable to accommodate new hardware, easily customizable to meet the needs of a particular user, and made of standard components for ease of manufacturing.
