Trip Report Advances Derivedfrom Real-World Experiences An INTERCHI '93 WorkshopReport Michael E. Atwood Introduction The INTERCHI workshop titled "Human-Computer Interaction Advances Derived from Real-World Experiences" began as a discussion of personal experiences in doing HCI (human-computer interaction) work in real-world settings. It concluded with discussion of some of the "tricks of the trade" for applying HCI in the real world and with suggestions for using the CHI and INTERACT conferences as vehicles of change for prompting more real-world applications of HCI. The latter set of suggestions, we present as challenges to the INTERCHI and CHI communities. The workshop participants are (in alphabetical order) Beth Adelson, Mike Atwood, Ruven Brooks, Jay Elkerton, Alison Lee, Hal MiUer-Jacobs, Franz Schmalhofer, and Thea Turner. NINE TRICKS OF THE TRADE ¢ Push what works (e.g., Fitt's Law, the power law of practice). ¢ Remember the 80/20 rule (80% of the result with 20% of the effort). ¢ Know when to turn it over to product development. ¢ Know the development environment and the developer's concerns. ¢ Know the customer's concerns. (Newell and Simon, 1972) has long been viewed as an important "trick of the trade". Chase what gives the most bang for the
