ADMINISTRATION OF HEALTH COMPUTING C. Robert Fox In health care institutions the computer has by and large been the slave of the Finance Department. Hospitals are at least beginning to realize that computers are not just another business machine but a powerful tool capable of handling technical, economic, social and political information. To people in industry this realization came years ago, therefore, it may be surprising to some that hospitals are just becoming aware of the computer's potential. However, it shouldn't be a surprise since the microscope was used for 168 years for blood counts before it was accepted for the kind of usage we now make of it. The stethoscope was invented 113 years before its general use, defibrillators 25 years and ECG computer analysis i0 years. One might say we're cautious. What is occurring now in health care is the slow but gradual usage of data processing services or systems. While the hospital represents the center of activity and the most competitive environment, nursing homes have yet to be successfully penetrated, laboratory systems are in the hundreds in a market of over 25,000 labs and physicians/dentists' offices have barely keen affected, but its changing organization dictates
