Ada Run Time Environment Working Grou p Proceedings from th e Software Safety Symposiu m Introduction The development of mission and safety critical software has bee n with us for a number of years . However, recently additiona l focus has been placed on software and its contribution to th e integrity (safe operation) of potentially hazardous systems, i .e . aircraft, air traffic control systems, chemical and nuclea r plants, and even automotive systems . The current practice s employed in the design and development of safety critica l software is independent of the implementation language . However , Ada and its RTE provide unique constructs for both contributin g to system integrity and in potentially compromising the integrit y of the system . As Ada is in increasing use in these systems, the Ada Run Tim e Environment Working Group (ARTEWG) on August 3 and 4 of this yea r sponsored a symposium on the state of safety critical softwar e development . Key contributors in the area of safety critica l software development from industry, government, and educatio n were invited to speak . This distinguished group included : Mike Brown (Navel Surface Warfare Center)
