ACM forum LETTERS Robert L. Ashenhurst, Editor acm forum On ACM Forum i ~ l m t e One More Early Software Maintainer Regarding the first software maintainer (Communications, Dec. 1982, p. 950), and Zimmerman's bid circa 1959 (Communications, Mar. 1983, p. 176), my response is "not good enough." When I joined North American Aviation in 1954, I took over and maintained several small Master Dimensions applications programs on the IBM CPC written by Bill Irion of NAA-Columbus. But I suspect that I was not the first software maintainer, either--the folks at NAALos Angeles, including O.D. Smith, were software veterans by the time m y Mzzy cheeks showed on the scene. I suspect that "1954" will not last long in the "first maintainer" sweepstakes. ACM President David Brandin has introduced a new method of theorem proof in his reply to Herb Grosch's letter on the ACM electoral process [Communications 23, 2 pp. 109-10], which can be accurately rifled reductio ad homihem. I think the debates in ACM could be carried on in a more professional manner that reflects the quality of its membership.
