Echoing the concerns of the conference Call for Papers, APL no longer holds the market niche which it once had - over the past few years new developments in the world of computing have overtaken many of the areas which were once our exclusive province. Given that the computing industry is one which focuses hard on 'winners', we have to ask ourselves whether or not there is a long-term place for APL, what that place might be and how we can attain it. The contention of this paper is that an honorable future for APL can be found and that we can reach this position more easily if we work toward it together the exact path to be outlined here is not necessarily the 'correct' one but at the present stage of the game our most urgent need is to consider as many of the facts as we can muster.
