Cul p INTRODUCTIO N Although computer assisted instruction (CAI) has been found to b e an effective instructional technique, it is only effective insofar a s it is used . In order to gain some insight into uses and users of CAI , we sent a questionnaire to the general faculty at the University o f Texas at Austin in the spring of 1978 . We hoped to learn from respondents if they thought CAI material s should be used more or less extensively and what they felt to be th e greatest impediments to (1) development of new CAI materials and (2 ) increasing the use of CAI among those who currently do not use CA I for their students . We also wanted to know if our respondents who used CAI for their students used programs which they had not written or o f which they had not directed the development (and if so, to what exten t and who indeed does write such material), the type
