A Survey of Programming Languages in CS Program s Larry Morton and Nicholas Norgaar d Department of Mathematics and Computer Scienc e Western Carolina Universit y Cullowhee, NC 2872 3 The purpose of this paper is t o present a brief summary of the results o f a recently conducted survey to determin e what computer science department s presently use as "primary" programmin g languages in the CS major . The surve y also invited respondents to make comments , suggestions, and plans regarding th e possibility in the near future o f migrating to a language such as c++, whic h supports object-oriented programming . Th e reasons for this survey come from concern s by members of our CS curriculum committe e as to whether our department shoul d continue to teach Pascal as the primar y programming language for the forseeabl e future, or to migrate to a language whic h provides an object-oriented environment , vital to modern software engineering . Although there seems to be genera l agreement among our faculty that CS be competent in a n graduates should programming language , object-oriented has been lack of consensus o n there
