Computer-mediated communication systems use a computer to create, store, manipulate, and communicate text files and data bases of various types. They include "electronic mail," computerized conference systems, and office support systems (text processing, managerial decision support systems that contain group communication components, etc.). Pilot studies indicate that their use can significantly increase the productivity of the "knowledge workers" who now make up the majority of the labor force in the United States and other "post-industrial" societies.... One estimate... is that labor savings for managerial, professional, and technical workers making optimal use of such systems could equate to two hours a day per person, or $62 billion dollars per year based on total current U.S. annual labor costs in these areas.
