Denenber g Department of Computer Science / Department of Business & Economic s SUNY, Plattsburgh 1290 1 Introductio n The PLATO IV System (PLATO) is probably the largest, most heavily funded CA I experiment in the world . The original NSF grant of five million dollars and th e matching five million dollars from the State of Illinois have, since 1959, resulte d in a veritable river of software and about one half dozen hardware sites capable o f supporting that software . Although a conclusive evaluation of PLATO is being per formed by the Educational Testing Service, I feel that I can share my reflection s on the system at a more personal level . I have watched the PLATO project for abou t ten years using it and contributed to it as a professional programmer at the Universit y of Illinois (at Urbana-Champaign), as a data processing instructor at Parkland Communit y College (Champaign, Illinois) and as a research consultant for Control Data Corporatio n (CDC) while pursuing my doctorate at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) .
