REPOR T A Passing Acquaintance with the 1974 A . Kent Morto n Dartmouth Colleg e Hanover NH 0375 5 Symposi I had the opportunity to attend only one of several schedule d presentations and activities at the Computer Science Conference/SIGCS E Symposium held in Detroit February 12-15 . However, I found it to be a n interesting session, entitled "Computer Scientists' Responsibility t o Educational Research" . It was organized and chaired by Adele Goldberg, Vice Chairman of SIGCUE . Jurg Nievergelt made good use of an overhead projector to illustrate hi s thoughts on "Appropriate Areas of Computer Science Research into Problems o f Education" . Nievergelt stated that, after an incredible flurry of activit y in the area of CAI in the late 50's and early 60's, a tremendous decay i n both activity and interest was strongly felt through the late 60's and we ar e only now beginning to recover our enthusiasm and make new progress on th e problems involved . He cited two reasons for the decay : 1) researchers an d observers expected too much at the outset, and 2) the problems were attacke d with insufficient means . A
