While there, I met Dr . John Ingram who had just completed his doctoral work at Londo n University on developing a new approach to the teacher-studen t relationship that he dubbed "negotiated learning ." I had no t heard of this paradigm before so I was curious to find out mor e about it . After many discussions with Dr. Ingram I became very interested in this new idea . In fact, the more I learned by talking with him the more I realized that negotiated learning i s not a strategy but a general approach to teaching and learning . When I returned to the States and my position at William Rainey Harper College as a professor in the Department o f Mathematical Sciences, where I had been teaching for 12 years , I became more and more
