A Model for Incorporating Learning Theories into Preservice Computer Training Carl F. Berger Dean, School of Education The University of Michigan Elizabeth A. Carlson School of Education The University of Michigan Colleges and universities have recognized the need to incorporate computer training into the preservice curriculum; courses have been added to preservice programs in order to prepare teachers who will be both knowledgeable and skilled in using the computer in teaching and learning. The focus of these courses in the past has often been technical information about the computer, rather than methods for integrating computers into instruction. Computer training that occurs in a context similar to that in which preservice educators will teach, however, is beginning to be viewed as a more useful approach. Many colleges and universities are now offering courses in which computer training is linked to instructional strategies and techniques that will enable future teachers to add the computer to their instructional tool kits, for both their own learning and that of their students. Several questions need to be addressed by the designers and instructors of these courses. How can computers be used to promote and enhance teaching and learning? What are the capabilities of
