A Guideline for Data Protection Legislation in Thailand Pateep Methakunavudhi DepartmentofHigherEducation, FacultyofEducation Chulalongkorn UniversityBangkok 10330, Thailand mpateep@chula.ac.th ecently, a succession of world events has had considrable impact on Thailand, resulting in a pressing need r the country to decide on a new course of action. Among these events have been settlement in Indochina and the establishment of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Asian Free Trade Aagreement. To achieve our desired growth and prosperity, Thailand needs to be a center for financial services, production, commerce, transportation, tourism and human resource development. The Office of the National Information Technology Council has proposed a national information technology policy, as the Country is rapidly joining the new era of the information society in the modern economy. The Technology Council proposal has stipulated three main programs that must be successfully carried out in order for the goals to be achieved: investment in a national information infrastructure, investment in human resource development in the area of information technology, and investment in good governance. The gist of these three tasks dictates the restructuring of operational systems in governmental units. All state offices must be fully equipped with information technology and personnel competent
