A Graphics Pipeline for Making 3D as Cool as Text Mark Thomas Right Hemisphere For all the years and mountains of research and development in 3D graphics, the technology remains tantalizingly out of reach for anyone except those involved in computeraided design or games. 3D has not entered the mainstream of interactive communications due to a variety of problems surrounding its use. This article looks at the issues from the perspective of a software vendor working to resolve these issues. We are all familiar and comfortable with text as an interactive communications tool. Today it is almost as comfortable as speech for most people working with computers. Everyone knows how to create it, cut and paste it, send it in an email or document or now, send an instant message.We don t give a second thought to the problem of typing it, editing it, moving it and distributing it. This is now becoming true for images, sound and even video. For 3D to become a communications tool for the masses, it is critical that the technical infrastructure around 3D approaches standard text in its ease of acquisition, manipulation and distribution.
