Silence, Lecture r Computer Technology Departmen t Purdue University School of Engineering and Technolog y Indianapolis, IN 4620 5 The Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indianap olis sponsored a career exploration program for physicall y handicapped high school students . Each group of student s spent three mornings in one of four engineering and technol ogy areas . In the computer section, half the time was spen t in the classroom discussing topics such as what computer s do, what they look like, the three basic steps in computing , the program development cycle, and the BASIC programmin g language . The rest of the time was spent in compute r laboratory working on assignments using terminals . Assignments included playing games, learning the BASI C language through computer assisted instruction entering a program, running a program, and modifying a program . Al l students showed insight into understanding computer logic . On the terminals, they worked independently most of th e time, concentrated on their assignments, and seemed to enjo y what they were doing . In
