A CAI COURSE OF EXERCISES IN NUMERICAL ANALYSI S GIOVANNA GAllANIGA and LILIANA IRON I Istituto di Analisi Numerica C .N .R . - PAVIA (ITALY ) Introductio n The traditional methods of teaching numerical analysis pre sent some problems that are due essentially to the nature o f numerical algorithms . These algorithms are meant to work automatically and therefore are many times unfit for applicatio n in a classroom . In fact the testing of numerical algorithms without a computer involves, in order to limit cumbersome arithmetic, a los s of meaning in the examples (it is necessary to reduce the number of digits used in computation or the number of iterations) . On the other hand, the use of a computer involves difficult y and time spent on programming and debugging . Moreover th e student has little opportunity to use computational procedure s on problems of his own choice . An appropriate use of CAI techniques for teaching numerica l methods could solve, at least partly, the problems stated above . An attempt was made at Institute of Numerical Analysis of th e National Research Council - Pavia to carry out a CAI course
