Conference Reports 1991 International W o r k s h o p on Formal M e t h o d s in V L S I D e s i g n Trip R e p o r t Richard Boulton University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory New Museums Site, Pembroke Street, Cambridge, England The 1991 International Workshop on Formal Methods in VLSI Design was held at the Omni International Hotel, Miami, Florida between January 9 and January 11. The workshop was sponsored by ACM SIGDA in cooperation with IFIP WG 10.2. The aim of the workshop was 'to bring together researchers interested in the application of formal techniques to the hardware design process' with the emphasis on providing 'an opportunity for synergistic interaction between researchers in "traditional" CAD areas and those interested in formal approaches to design'. My personal interest is in theorem proving, but I found it very interesting to see work on other verification techniques, and to hear the views of a broad spectrum of people working in the CAD/Formal Methods area. The presentations were interspersed with a number of discussion sessions. The impression I received was of a research community which not surprisingly differs on
