A consideration of only material published in the last year or two would hardly suffice as an adequate background for the reviews t o follow; it there fore seems essential to include a wider selection of work to define more adequately the present status of the fi eld. At the same time, freed of the necessity of providing a more or less complete bibliography of material related to the assigned subject for the immediately preceding period, the authors have more freedom in the choice of work to be included and in the presentation of selected areas of study. This review will deal primarily with the renal transport mechanisms for electro lytes and water and t he action upon them of several groups of diuretics.
