Abstract
Institute of California, Berkeley Downloaded from jnutritioorg by guest on January 18, 2011 (Received for publication December 21, 1936) Elvehjem co-workers ( '35, '36 a, '36 b) Koehn Elvehjem ( '36) have reported a new dietary factor from which they find to be necessary in addition to vitamins B(Bi) flavin, B4, BO 'B2' [which, it would seem, is identical with the 'filtrate factor' of Lepkovsky Jukes ('35, '36 a, '36 b) Lepkovsky, Jukes Krause ('36)] for growth of rats. "We wish to report certain results which we have obtained with the alcohol-ether precipitate from air-dried fresh hog , following the procedure described by these authors. From the supernatant liquid we prepared an adsórbate with the resulting filtrate. A water extract of the precipitate showed no fluorescence when tested by the 'black light' (Supplée others, '36), but the supernatant liquid was highly fluorescent. EXPEBIMENTAL Two types of basal diets have been used in this laboratory in tests for flavin vitamin B6 ( , '37). Diet 787-B has the following composition: casein 18%, salts 4%, filtered butter fat 8%, cod oil 2% cornstarch 1Aided by grants from the Board of Research the College of Agriculture of the University of California,
