THE DESCRIPTIVE CHART AND ITS PURPOSE Since 1905 there has been in existence, with occasional modification, a chart endorsed by the Society of American Bacteriologists for recording the characteristics of bacterial cultures. Recent literature, however, indicates that some confusion exists as to the purpose of this chart. This confusion was well illustrated at the 1917 meeting of the Society, the discussion called forth by the report of this committee showing that a number of bacteriologists have ideas as to the object of the chart different from those held by the present members of the committee. The confusion is natural, for each change in the membership of the committee
