This paper presents additional data gathered on series of compounds closely related to [ ° C CH, Downloaded from http://jb.asm.org/ on December 9, 2011 by deepdyve CH3 dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, the first of the quaternary ammonium salts to attain technical significance as a germicide (Domagk, 1935). Contrary to expectations, no extensive data have as yet been published on this group of compounds. In this paper the influence of the chain length of the long hydrocarbon chain and of the nature of the lower alkyl and aralkyl groups is discussed on the basis of the experimental material. EXPERIMENTAL In order to secure reproducible data on germicidal efficacy, it is necessary to standardize the test, including the origin and cultivation of the bacterial strains used. A method which fulfills these conditions is the official or...
