In 6 other states, performance and proficiency of municipal or county department laboratories must be certified by the state agency, and in 2 states, laboratories must have state approval if their bacteriological results are used as the basis for premium payments to milk producers. In 4 states a voluntary plan of approval is followed in which case the laboratory in question requests that a survey be made, but in 2 of these 4 states laboratories conducting bacteriological work on milk and using results for official grading purposes must be certified by an appropriate state agency. In 3 states certification is required before an approved milk inspection service may be established and, in another, laboratories contracting to make official bacteriological examinations for municipal or county departments must be approved by the state agency. Thus only 15 of the 44 states reporting have any kind of plan currently in effect for the inspection, approval, or certification of laboratories performing bacteriological procedures on milk.
