Spring1964.With this issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry the publication completes its one hundred and twenty-first year, the first number bearing the date of July 1844. Thus it has the distinction of being four months older than the American Psychiatric Association. It owes its existence to the initiative of one man, Amariah Brigham, Superintendent of the State Hospital at Utica, N. Y. He did not call himself the Editor; the Journal, he indicated, would be âedited by the officers of the Asylum.â During its first 50 years the Journal was the property of the Utica State Hospital. In 1894 it was purchased by the Association and became its official publication. A 3-man editorial committee, consisting of Dr. Edward Cowles, Dr. Henry W. Hurd and Dr. Richard S.
