New HorizonsThomas RobertKramer,S. Kennedy,M.D. M.A.he World Wide Web is the hottest buzzword in the computer industry today. Growing at a rate of thousands of sites per week, the âWebâ has become as seductive and as prolific as the telephone. What is the Web? One definition calls it âwide-area hypermedia information retrieval initiative aiming to give universal access to a large universe of documents.â Generally, the Web is graphic way to view and navigate the Internet. Rather than your screen showing letters and numbers streaming across, you have pictures, graphics, and a user-friendly way to move around the ubiquitous Internet. The way to view and interact with this graphic environment is by using a âbrowser.â This software shows you these graphic pages. Popular Web browsers are Netscape, Microsoftâs Internet Explorer, and Mosaic. The World Wide Web came from two separate inventions. The first was the development of the Internet by the Department of Defense. The second was the development of easily understood and manipulated programming language for browsing. In 1969, the Defense Departmentâs Advanced Research Project Agency started what is now the Internet, originally termed the âARPANET.â The Defense Department felt that any disruption of communication in a nuclearPreview Only.
