This volume takes the position that âpsychoanalytic theory provides the most comprehensive theory of psychopathology at the present time.â It purports to demonstrate that âpsychoanalytic theory has applicability to treatment of a wide range of disordersâ and emphasizes that psychoanalytic theory is âcentral to a comprehensive understanding and conceptualization of psychopathology.â The reader will find little apology for psychoanalysis on these pages. There is also no shortage of psychoanalytic history. The development of psychoanalytic thought is seen as important information in its own right, and the editors and the contributors view psychoanalysis as a process of discovery. The step-by-step accumulation of an ever-deepening understanding of a large body of information is inherent in the psychoanalytic method. It applies equally to both the massive volume of data that is psychoanalysis and to the day-to-day work between patients and ourselves. As I awaited the arrival of my copy with anticipation, I wanted the book to be informative but not too dry, and to demonstrate that psychoanalysis was still an exciting field that had central relevance to the work of clinical psychiatrists.
