When does the historical reporting and study of an acceptable branch of medicine deserve status recognition? The former would seem to occur when the group emerges from its adolescence and becomes old enough to be aware of the value of looking back at its origins; the latter when it has reached mature adulthood and is recognized by the others as having something really worthwhile to contribute. Often the recogrntion arrives simultaneously with the proving of itself. One might say that Gregory Zilboorg signaled the end of the adolescent phase of at least American psychiatry with the 1941 publication of his History of Medical Psychology. Full adult recognition then can be said to be indicated by the acceptance of Clarence Farrar, Editor of the APA Journal, of a survey on the history of psychiatry for inclusion in this issue of the APA Journal.
