Abstract
There are pockets of discontent that will form in some readersâ minds, as they did in mine. For example, the section on treatment clearly outlines how a classic psychoanalysis session is conducted and includes detailed consideration of termination and of combining psychoanalysis with other therapies. However, this section does not deal sufficiently with the specifics of treatment for the variety of conditions to which psychoanalysis is applied, or with the many difficulties that can arise in the conduct of a psychoanalysis. Further, the reader may find one or more authors sounding more definitive than seems justified. The reviewer was disappointed with the relegation of so much of contemporary psychoanalysis (including intersubjectivity) to âotherâ status. The selection of patients for the classic treatment approach was barely addressed and threatens by dint of omission to perpetuate the criticism of psychoanalytic treatment as too limited in applicability. Perhaps issues of this sort will be dealt with in later editions, which are certain to come. Despite its shortcomings, this book will prove a classic text for readers interested in psychoanalytic theory and treatment.
