Comparing coherent microwave emission from LPM and B‐H showers; Coherent microwave emission offers a promising probe of cosmic ray events in the UHE region upwards of 10 14 eV. It is possible that this means may allow detection of events which could not be detected in any other way, such as those initiated by UHE neutrinos from cosmic point sources. The method has the advantages that the target can be as simple as rock or ice, and the detectors for microwaves are comparatively inexpensive. An issue which we raise is whether the multiple scattering process known as the Landau, Pomeranchuk, Migdal (LPM) effect, predicted to set in when e + and e -; are very fast and forward in the UHE regime, modifies the microwave shower emission characteristics. We argue here that the charge imbalance in the shower should be rather independent of whether the shower has LPM or the usual Bethe‐Heitler development.
