Media File: Jane Austen gets a makeover

Media File: Jane Austen gets a makeover LOGOS 82 LOGOS 18/2 ©2007 LOGOS The author photograph has become commonplace on book covers, and the received wisdom is that authors can add to their sales with the right publicity shot. Now Jane Austen is to undergo a makeover, on the grounds that the only authenti- cated portrait of her is too unattractive. The British publisher Wordsworth Editions has commissioned a new picture of Jane. Helen Trayler, their managing director, was quoted recently in The Times : “The poor old thing didn’t have anything going for her in the way of looks. Her original portrait is very, very dowdy. It wouldn’t be appealing to readers, so I took it upon myself to commission a new picture ... We’ve given her a bit of a makeover, with make-up and some hair extensions and removed her night-cap. Now she looks great — as if she’s just walked out of a salon.” Trayler continued in the Guardian : “She was not much of a looker. Very, very plain. Jane Austen wasn’t very good looking. She’s the most inspiring, readable author, but to put her on the cover wouldn’t be very inspiring at all. It’s just a bit off- putting.
