Since one always wishes to send one’s friends messages of h o p e , I p u n c t i l i o u s l y g i v e t h e m t h e n a m e s o f publishers who publish their kinds of books and advise them to send a 200-word synopsis, a list of contents, a biographical note and two specimen chapters. To spare their feelings I do not mention that their chances of acceptance are infinitesimal. But I do suggest they include return envelopes and warn them that “publishing is a rough old game”. Road-blocking entry to the overcrowded market- place are thousands of snowed-under editors most o f w h o m d o n o t h a v e t h e t i m e e v e n t o m a k e reasoned rejections of unsolicited manuscripts. The least responsive sector of publishing is fiction. “Brace yourselves,”
