There has been a solid expansion in crafts and design books. The Hip Hotels series has been a glamorous as well as a profitable adjunct to the core publishing activity. But, overall, the house has expanded and flour- ished entirely in the mould created by Walter and Eva in 1949. One of Eva’s last major public appearances was to preside over the dazzling Thames & Hudson 50th Anniversary party at the National Gallery in London. Throughout that time, as conglomerates have grown and publishing has become ever more impersonal, it is a joy to be able to salute so distin- guished a private family business and to wish it at least a further fifty happy and successful years. 19 WALTER AND EVA NEURATH LOGOS 15/1 © WHURR PUBLISHERS 2004 An addendum to Diana Athill’s article “André Deutsch” in 14/4 From Professor Paul Richardson, Oxford I am sure many of your readers were as charmed as I was by Diana Athill’s article about André Deutsch. It covered some of the same ground as her illuminating Stet , but had some new perspec- t i v e s a s w e l l a n d w a s w r i t t e n , a s e v e r, i n h e r immaculate style. For those interested in Deutsch’s life and achievement as a publisher – they were almost entirely congruent – we have at Oxford Brookes U n i v e r s i t y a w o n d e r f u l r e s o u r c e . T h a n k s t o Graham Greene, André’s executor, and the good offices of Martyn Goff, our university library now h o u s e s t h e A n d r é D e u t s c h C o l l e c t i o n . T h i s comprises his personal library at the time he died. Its contents can be divided into three parts. First, there are first editions of almost all, but not all, of the books he published over four decades from the foundation of Alan Wingate through to his sale of his eponymous company. A number of these carry personal dedications from his loyal authors such as John Updike. Secondly, there are those other books he had chosen to buy or had been given and had decided to keep. These reflect an interesting shift in his personal interests over t h e y e a r s . F i n a l l y t h e r e i s a c o l l e c t i o n o f Hungarian books, mostly fiction. Over and above this, we hold a small collec- tion of photographs, cartoons, press cuttings etc relating to André as well as a pretty complete set of the company’s catalogues and seasonal lists. As I have said, the collection is not abso- lutely complete, or so we think. The books do not entirely match the catalogues – but when were seasonal lists that accurate?
