69 LOGOS Cause for Debate – 9 British book trade bemuses ex-auto dealer Ian Fletcher A native of South Buckingham- shire in Southeast England, Ian Fletcher spent most of his working life in the motor trade until six years ago, when he and his wife decided to become booksellers. Their Horizons Bookshop is housed in a 17th century low-beamed (“mind your head”) house in the heart of Marlow, famous for its suspension bridge across the River Thames. The Fletchers opened their second shop in neighbouring Beaconsfield in 2000 and have now opened a third in Burnham. I knew nothing about books, but after twenty-four years selling cars, I knew a bit about running a competitive business, including the use of price promotion. Reduced prices to help sell slow-moving or old models made good business sense. However, in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of bookselling, I found it’s the reverse. You reduce prices on the bestsellers, which should be your most profitable books.
