From 1987 to 2001, he was Managing Director, and since then has been President of Blackwell Publishing. Throughout his career he has been involved in developments in electronic publishing and their effect on copyright. He was Chairman of the Adonis Consortium throughout the 1980s and of the STM Group from 1998 to 2000. He is author or co-author of three books on journal publishing.
