The Editorâ–™s Place LOGOS 128 LOGOS 10/3 © WHURR PUBLISHERS 1999 The LOGOS 20th Century Books Project is basi- cally an exploration of books as instruments of eth- ical and intellectual change. It started in 1994 when the editor asked the forty-odd members of the LOGOS International Advisory Board to answer this question: “Which books, published in the 20th century, have had the most influence over the development of the century?” We were not seeking a list of the most successful, the best or the greatest. Many of the nominations, we envisaged, would not have been written by professional authors, but by leaders in social, political or scientific fields who chose, at some stage of their lives, to embody their ideas, phi- losophy and experience in books. There was no expectation of a definitive list. The aim was to compile a selection of outstanding examples of books that could be seen, in retrospect, to have influenced significantly the way people thought and acted, and thus to have influenced the course of history for better or worse.
