Indeed, invisibility and a happy author are signs of a good editor. But invisi• bility is not an argument for disappearance. It has never been more urgent t h a n now, in t h e midst of the turbulent adjustment between the print and elec• tronic cultures, to assert the indispensability of edit• ing. Every practising editor is today challenged to demonstrate that editing enhances the author/reader communication - whatever the medium. In t h e vertical sequence of t h e matrix, editing is t h e bridge from authorship to production. It is a bridge with many arches.
