H e was Director'General of the British Library Lending D i v ' ision from 1974 to 1985 and of the Science, Technology and Industry Division from 1985 to 1988. His earlier career included posts in the libraries of the Universities of Oxford, Glasgow, Southampton, Newcastle upon Tyne and Bath. Awarded Honorary Doctorates of literature and science (1980 and 1988), Line was President of the U K Library Association in 1990 and was awarded the IFLA medal in the same year.
