His earlier career included posts in the libraries of the Universities of Oxford, Glasgow, Southampton, Newcastle upon Tyne and Bath. Awarded Honorary Doctorates of literature and science (1980 and 1988), Line was President of the U K Library Association in 1990 and was awarded the IFLA medal in the same year. H e is now work• ing as a consultant in strategic planning and the management of change in libraries and is Editor of Alexandria^ an international jour• nal for librarians, and Librarianship and Information Work WorldwidCf an annual review of professional developments.
