He has made significant contribu• tions to the modernization of book trade distribution in Britain, notably through his lead• ership in the introduction of ISBNs and teleordering. After graduating from Cambridge University, he joined his family's firm in 1 9 5 5 , became a Director in 1966 and was Editor of The Bookseller from 1 9 7 7 - 7 9 . Whitaker continues to be an active proponent of E D I (Electronic Data Interchange). Publishers and librarians, having stabilized some• what, by law and accommodation, their long strug• gle of the '70s and '80s over photocopying, are now blessed with a new opportunity in the '90s - to use that experience to forestall another, potentially just as damaging, estrangement. T h i s opportunity arises from t h e growth of "CD-ROM Networking". A CD-ROM (compact disc - read only memory) is a small miracle.
