LOGOS The evolution of Australian publishing Michael Zifcak Hah of the A$l bihion dollars' worth of books sold in Australia last year were published in Australia. Forty years ago, Austrahan books contributed only 15% of the total. This transformation from a major English-language market to a major English-language publishing country can be traced to many influences. Three are significant: Entering the book trade in Australia forty years ago, Michael Zifcak built up and is today Chairman of the country's second largest bookselling chain. Collins Booksehers Pty Ltd, headquartered in Melbourne (no connection with the pubhsher of that name), has forty branches and eleven franchise stores countrywide. Zifcak was President of the Austrahan Booksellers Association from 1973 to 1975 and has been very active in the national and inter• national scene. He was awarded an OBE in 1981 for services to litera• ture. 1. The dramatic increase in the demand for educa• tional books. While British publishers were trying to meet this demand by adapting their texts to Austrahan syllabuses, the demand for Austrahan- originated texts provided a sohd basis on which Austrahan-based pubhshers could buhd their pro• grammes. 2.
