Checklist of Marine Biota of China Seas

Checklist of Marine Biota of China Seas BOOK REVIEW DOI: 10.1651/09-3228.1 Checklist of Marine Biota of China Seas. Liu Ruiyu (ed.). 2008. Science Press, Academia Sinica, Beijing. 1267 pp. ISBN 978-7-03-023722-4. US$180.00. Frederick R. Schram, Burke Museum of Natural History, University of Washington, PO Box 1567, Langley, WA 98260, USA This hefty volume is faithful to its title—a Check List. It systematically records the Chinese marine biota (prokary- otes and eukaryotes) as currently understood and provides the scientific names in both Latin and Chinese, including original designation, the main synonyms (in square brackets), and the geographical distributions in China seas and the world oceans of all species. It covers some 22,629 taxa in 46 major phyla. This volume supercedes an earlier volume (Huang, 1994) and includes a 30 % increase over the fauna recorded 16 years ago. This treatment entailed input from over 50 experts. The book is provided with an excellent systematic index of all taxa. The marine arthropod sections alone encompass material on pages 606-812. While the bulk of the introductory material is in Chinese, the closely paired Chinese/English entries in the main checklist are helpful, allowing those in the West, and so inclined, to link Chinese names with the Latin binomens. Thus, this book can serve as a valuable addition to any systematic library. R EFERENCES Huang, Z-G. 1994. Marine Species and Their Distributions in China’s Seas. China Ocean Press, Beijing.
