It is my pleasure to be here in Qingdao at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Oceanology with all of the distinguished scientists and honored guests present here this evening to honor Professor Liu Rui-yu (J. Y.). The President of The Crustacean Society, Professor Jeff Shields, is currently in Chile, but he extends his best wishes to Prof. Liu, and his friends and colleagues here on this memorable day. As a result, Prof. Shields has delegated me, a member of the Executive Board of The Crustacean Society, the distinct honor to present in the name of the society the Excellence in Research Award. This honor is only given periodically, and only to the most distinguished recipients nominated to The Crustacean Society Awards Committee. We are presenting this today in recognition of the long and distinguished career in carcinology of Professor Liu, who has had a remarkable history as a marine biologist and a forceful advocate for the study of crustacean biology. First of all, Prof. Liu has been a prolific writer, publishing more than 160 scientific papers and 11 monographs relevant to the biology of crustaceans.
