Abraham H. Halevy (1927-2006) In Memoriam Abraham H. Halevy (1927–2006) In Memoriam Abraham Halevy was born in Tel Aviv in 1927. He completed his Ph.D. studies in 1958 and in 1964 established the Department of Floriculture at the Faculty of Agriculture of The Hebrew University. Abraham was a scientist recognized worldwide as one of the leaders in the field of floricul - ture and ornamental horticulture. He was also the founder of the Israeli flower industry and initiator of the teaching and research of this topic in the academic institutes in Israel. Following his Ph.D. studies Abraham joined the laboratory of Dr. H.M. Cathey at Beltsville, Maryland, and was among the pioneers of the investigation and application of plant growth re- tardants. Upon his return to Israel he played a major role in the development of the floriculture industry, which currently has annual exports of more than $200 million and provides a living for thousands of farmers. His extensive research into various aspects of basic and applied issues in floriculture turned his laboratory into a training center for several generations of professional scientists, extension officers, and farmers.
