MALINA and Gerd THEISSEN (eds.), The Social Setting of Jesus and the Gospels (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2002), pb, xvi + 404 pp. ISBN 0-8006- 3452-7. $24.00. This collection of essays arose out of the meeting of the Context Group in 1999, which was designed to address the question: ’What can one, with the help of historically informed social- scientific models, know about the &dquo;historical&dquo; Jesus from the New Testament that cannot be known by other approaches?’ (p. vii). The section on Introductory Perspectives includes: Bruce J. Malina, ’Social-Scientific Methods in Historical Jesus Research’; Richard L. Rohrbaugh, ’Ethnocentrism and Historical Questions about Jesus’; and Wolfgang Stegemann, ’The Contextual Ethics of Jesus’. The section on Social-Psychological Perspectives includes: Andries van Aarde, ’Jesus as Fatherless Child’; Stuart L. Love, ’Jesus Heals the Hemorrhaging Woman’; John J. Pilch, ’Altered States of Consciousness in the Synoptics’; and Christian Strecker, ’Jesus and the Demoniacs’. The section on Social-Boundary Concerns includes: Richard E. DeMaris, ’The Baptism of Jesus: A Ritual-Critical Approach’; Santiago Guijarro, ’The Politics of Exorcism’; S. Scott Bartchy, ’The Historical Jesus and Honor Reversal at the Table’; Philip F. Esler, ’Jesus and the Reduction of Intergroup Conflict’; and Annette Weissenrieder, ’The Plague of Uncleanness? The Ancient Illness Construct &dquo;Issue of Blood&dquo; in Luke 8:43-48’. The section on Politics and Political Religion includes: Gerd Theissen, ’The Political Dimension of Jesus’ Activities’; T. Raymond Hobbs, ’The Political Jesus: Discipleship and Disengagement’; K.C. Hanson, ’Jesus and the Social Bandits’; and Dennis C. Duling, ’The Jesus Movement and Network Analysis’. The section on Politics and Political Economy includes: Douglas E. Oakman, ’Money in the Moral Universe of the New Testament’; and Gary Stansell, ’Gifts, Tributes, and Offerings’. The volume concludes with a section on Overviewing the Task which contains one essay: Albert Verdoodt, ’The Gospels in Comparison with the Pauline Letters: What We Can Learn from Social-Scientific Models’. This helpful collection suggests new and fruitful insights into the historical Jesus may be gleaned from the application of social-scientific models to Jesus and his context. RLW VERMES, Geza, Jesus in His Jewish Context (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2003), pb, x + 198 pp. ISBN 0-8006-3623-6. $19.00. This volume is ’meant to replace and enrich further’ (p. vii) Vermes’ earlier work, Jesus and the World of Judaism (1983). The first seven chapters remain the same as those in the 1983 edition. The last three chapters of the 1983 edition have been replaced with five new chapters: ’The Jesus Notice of Josephus Re-examined’; ’A Summary of the Law by Flavius Josephus’; ’New Light on the Sacrifice of Isaac from Qumran’; ’The Dead Sea Scrolls Fifty Years On’; and ’Jesus the Jew and his Religion: Autobiographical Reflections’. It should be noted that these five new chapters are all reprints of earlier essays published between 1987 and 1999. The one new element in the volume, contained in the Preface, is Vermes’ response to criticisms levelled against him by John P. Meier. It is helpful to have collected in one place Vermes’ more recent contributions to historical Jesus research.
