Capps suggests that where traditional scholarly methods are at an impasse the application of a psychological perspective may prove beneficial. In Part I he begins his investigation by rooting his work in the portraits of Jesus by four major scholars: Sanders, Meier, Crossan, and Borg. In Part 2 he lays out the methodological framework involved in examining the psychobiography of individ- uals and the psychohistory of groups. In Part 3 Capps applies this method to three aspects of the life of Jesus. First, he explores the effects of illegitimacy and fatherlessness upon the childhood of Jesus and the impact this would have upon him as an adult: ’he would seek in &dquo;Abba&dquo; a father who demonstrated his love for Jesus by subjecting him to the same discipline that human fathers bestowed on their legitimate sons’ (p. 159). Secondly, he investigates Jesus in his role as healer, in particular, how his family of origin influenced him in this role and how the psychohistory of his peasant culture needed someone in this http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus Brill
