Interpretation has been thrown wide open as new voices have entered the discussion and new eyes have encountered the text, as the historical- critical establishment and its rationalist-fundamentalist counterpart have increasingly given way to the recognition that what is brought to the text makes a decisive difference in what is found there. Of course there are those who would go further and say that what is brought to the text makes all of the difference—that interpretation, after all, is essentially the ’creating’ of meaning (see the discussion of such recent interpretive approaches by David Penchansky, The Betrayal of God: Ideological Conflict in the Book of Job [Louisville: Westminster/John Knox, 1990], pp. 9-25). This brings us to the vast chasm of hermeneutical debate which has opened in our time. While I am not pre- pared here to take on such expansive matters, I would say that Pentecostals would seem to have a unique vantage point to bring to the discussion.
