Numerous movies tell the tale of how a person goes from rags to riches, by working hard and believing in him- or herself. Others highlight how love and marriage will save the day and provide happiness for all time. However, American films also occasionally question these contemporary myths, challenging viewers to perceive success and happiness in alternative ways, or to notice the dark side of the American dream. Mathew S. Rindge explores some of these films in Profane Parables: Film and the American Dream.Rindge comes to religion and film from biblical studies. He is not alone in this approach. A vast number of theologians have highlighted the usefulness of bringing films and the Bible into conversation. Still, Rindge manages, with a well-grounded approach, to present more than the usual biblical analogies for which the field is known and sometimes criticized. His start and end-point are Jesus’ parables. Somewhat simplified, Rindge argues that films occasionally challenge our thoughts of right and wrong and the myths of our time, in a similar way to Jesus’ parables.
